this ic coming to a close.. finall i have a rough idea of what i should do for my precedence studies.
for my house on douglas house, i would like to point out the private and public circulation and how he uses glass windows in the facade to open up the double volume space and this eccentuates the vastness of the space.
Corbusier on the other hand though he has the double volume space, he leaves it outside and does not cover it up hence he also achieves a vastness in space.
He achieves the feeling of spaciousness in the exterior of the home.
Both of these double volume spaces enable the user to interact with their surrounding.

Well, i couldn't get a good view on douglas house. but the site is really ulu.. very.. remote from the rest of the world. i wonder what kinda users they are....
chui ting was here~!
ok.. that was chuiting... who invaded my blog.
anyways.. leme continue my discourse.
My precedence would like to cover a few points..
Double volume space,
Corbu and meiers make use of double volume space to interact with their surroundings. As in the guest would be able to experience the expanse of the space in front of them because of the wider angle of viewing allowed from a double volume space.
however, meiers and corbu express this idea differently.
Meiers puts his double volume space in the house and walls it up with a glass facade which frames the picturesque view of the ocean with linings. The guest is thus able to interact with the surroundings from the comfort of the living area.
Corbu however places his double volume space on the exterior and exposes the guest directly to his environment, thus giving a slightly different spacial experience. a more open feeling.
use of pilotis and to what achievement.
The function of the pilotis is used with different intent.
Meiers uses the pilotis to demarcate public and private spaces. to create the double volume space, Meiers needed the pilotis and because of the double volume space, he was able to have a public space.
Corbu however uses the pilotis because he wants to explore the various ways which walls can be used to create a visual experience in the house since they don't have to follow the classical rules of load bearing any longer. Hence, the walls seem to curve erratically and leads the person in a certain pattern through the house.
use of white colour..
Meiers uses a whiter white than corbu who uses a milkier white. What Erwin says is that Meiers is trying to achieve a more pristine and machine like feel to his house. and this is seen in the reviews which describe the douglas house as more machine like.
use of roof gardens
the roof gardens is probably one of the more obvious influence of corbu on meiers as meiers incorporates this in the douglas house.
but again, their method of expressing the use is different.
The both of them place their roof gardens on the roof.. which is like. duh.. but meiers makes the entrance from the top to the bottom because of the douglas house's location at the slope of a hill. The garden thus is the first interaction that the guest has with his surroundings. however, for corbu, since the entrance is from the bottom, he uses the stairs to lead the guest to a climatic view of the surrounding. As if leading the guest through a tiring journey and then rewarding him with a view from the top.
using stairs to demarcate private and public spaces.
Meiers uses the stair distinctly and places two flights of stairs on the extreme edges of the house. and hence creates a circulation that separates the private from public spaces in the house.(diagram)
In Villa stein, Corbu seems to be doing this too. There is a spiral stairs which he seems to reserve exclusively for the private use as it is hidden behind a door and hidden from the sight of the guest who enters from the front entrance and uses the stairs which links only the first and second floors together. the main spiral stairs is accesible mainly to the user. hence there is a distinct demarcation of private and public spaces using stairs.
use of ribbon strip windows.
Corbu uses ribbon strip windows and seems rather mechanical about it. gives the house a pristine and clean cut look. adds depth and clarity to the interior and acts as the treshold between the inside and outside.
Though meiers dosnt' really use ribbon strip windows he also uses glass facade as the treshold between the inside and outside.
Interaction with the site.
Here is the tricky part. how does both houses interact with their sites.
It would seem that these two sites are both surrounded by much trees and this seems to indicate how the two architects are trying to draw nature into their architecture. It would also seem as if both houses frame nature into it using their facades. and double volume space..
OK.. now to express all these ideas with diagrams.
CRIKEY!! :O
